Big Fifth Inning Sends No. 10 La Verne Past Baseball

LA VERNE, Calif. — No. 10 University of La Verne used an 11-run fifth inning to power to an 18-3 victory over the MIT baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: La Verne 18, MIT 3
  • Records: La Verne (12-1 Overall ), MIT (0-6 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of four walks and a hit by pitch to take a 4-0 lead without registering a hit. La Verne scored two runs via bases loaded walks and another on a fielders choice. 
  • MIT pulled back two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas ) walked and stole second to open the inning. Grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) then reached on a walk before sophomore John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) filed out to right. McCarthy and Tubbs moved into scoring position on a double steal before Tubbs scored on an errant throw to third. The next batter, sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled to right to drive home McCarthy.
  • La Verne immediately countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI single from junior Aidan Salcedo (Murrieta, Calif.) before scoring a pair of runs on an MIT error.
  • MIT junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 7-3. 
  • The Leopards put the game out of reach with an 11-run fifth inning. Senior Jason Givens (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) doubled to drive in two runs as part of the inning. The Leopards also added three RBI singles in the inning and scored a pair of runs on bases loaded walks, taking an 18-3 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Zev Moore went 2-for-4 for MIT, including his solo home run in the fifth inning. Moore now has two home runs and seven RBI on the season.
  • First year Lucas Quintana (Pomona, Calif.) earned the win for La Verne, pitching four innings, giving up three hits, striking out three and walking four. 
  • Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) was charged with the loss for MIT, giving up five earned over three innings, walking five and striking out a pair. 
  • Salcedo finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored, three RBI and three walks for La Verne. 
  • Nine different players drove in runs for the Leopards.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT heads home following Sunday's game, the Engineers will play at Tufts at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 12. La Verne will host Franklin and Marshall for a three-game set, March 13-15.
