CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT outscored Emerson College, 4-1, in the third quarter to help it pull away for a 14-8 win in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. First-year
Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) and junior
Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) both posted four goals and one assist for the Engineers while senior Jack Burns (Clarksville, Md.) powered the Lions with two goals, one assist, and three groundballs.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 14, Emerson 8
- Records: MIT (5-6 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC); Emerson (2-10 Overall, 0-5 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Emerson junior Aedan Kiniry (Westport, Conn.) opened the scoring after 45 seconds expired. However, Metalios buried the equalizer on a pass from junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) and then Bleil gave MIT the lead at the 9:25 mark. Kiniry evened the score at 2-2, but junior Oscar Lindenthal (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Metalios created a small cushion for the Engineers during the last three minutes of the quarter.
- After trading goals to start the second stanza, Pierce recorded a man-up goal which was followed by senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) connecting on a pass from Garrett Campagna, making the score 7-3 with 9:01 on the clock.
- Exactly 34 seconds later, first-year Brady Fish (San Clemente, Calif.) found the back of the net for the Lions. However, a defensive battle ensued until Burns broke through with 1:48 remaining. MIT won the ensuing faceoff which resulted in Pierce completing the hat trick and extending the lead to 8-5 at halftime.
- In the pivotal third quarter that had a 4-1 scoring advantage for the Engineers, Metalios posted two goals while junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Campagna both notched one goal and one assist. Senior Alex Menendez (Naperville, Ill.) provided the lone goal for Emerson as he redirected a pass from Burns.
- Sanchez found Pierce 2:05 into the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 13-6. The score remained unchanged until an unassisted strike by Lindenthal with 4:18 to go.
- Senior Benson Offit (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and sophomore Zachary Stern-Hayes (Brunswick, Maine) produced the final goals of the day, coming during the final 1:05 or regulation.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Sanchez and Campagna both posted one goal and three assists as senior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) collected six groundballs and one caused turnover.
- Sophomore Ashton Axe (Portola Valley, Calif.) produced three groundballs and two caused turnovers while classmate Stone Smith (Roswell, Ga.) chipped in two caused turnovers.
- Graduate student Justin Gelwicks (Katonah, N.Y.) won 10 of 14 faceoffs and notched four groundballs as sophomore Denley Kofoed (Centennial, Colo.) was 6-of-11 in faceoffs and scooped up four groundballs.
- In net, junior Collin Lung (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made eight saves while first-year AJ Sachwitz (Falls Church, Va.) turned away two shots during the last four minutes of action.
- Senior Grant Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif.) produced four groundballs as junior Charlie van Beuren (Portsmouth, R.I.) totaled three groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Lions.
- In net, junior Ethan Corby (Whitby, Ontario) collected 14 saves, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
