Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Williams, 20-9

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Seven goals in the second quarter propelled Williams College to a 20-9 win over the MIT men's lacrosse team in a non-conference game on Tuesday night. Sophomore Ashton Axe (Portola Valley, Calif.) totaled four groundballs, one caused turnover, and one assist for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Williams 20, MIT 9
  • Records: MIT (5-7 Overall); Williams (5-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Williams notched the first goal of the night after 3:11 elapsed. However, 48 seconds later senior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) redirected a feed from Axe. The Engineers then went in front after senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) connected on pass from junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) at the 8:46 mark.
  • Following almost four minutes of scoreless play, the Ephs recorded two goals in a span of 1:01 to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) buried the equalizer with 2:04 on the clock but Williams found the back of the net with 27 seconds remaining.
  • In the second quarter, the Ephs generated seven straight goals to establish an 11-3 advantage at halftime.
  • Campagna was a factor in three of MIT's four goals during the third quarter. He earned assists on blasts by junior Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and first-year Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) and added an unassisted goal. Pierce contributed another goal as time expired, making the score 17-7.
  • The Ephs produced three goals during the first 4:31 of the fourth quarter. A defensive battle ensued until Bleil scored on a pass from Stiles with 2:44 left to play. Pierce completed the hat trick two minutes later courtesy of a feed from sophomore Ryan Quinn (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).
