Suffolk Runs Past Baseball in Non-Conference Action

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — MIT baseball senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) finished with three hits, including a second inning home run, but visiting Suffolk University jumped to an early 2-0 lead and never trailed, defeating the Engineers, 13-7, in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Records: Suffolk (8-17 Overall), MIT (11-13 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk scored twice in the top of the first inning, as graduate student Alex Sorenti-Burns (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) singled to right to score sophomore Colin Flynn (Dorchester, Mass.). The Rams also took advantage of an error that allowed the second run to score.
  • MIT got a run back in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Tubbs' fifth home run of the season.
  • The Engineers continued to trail 2-1 until the fourth inning when Suffolk added four runs. The big blast in the inning came off the bat of Flynn, as he delivered a three-run home run to push the Rams lead to 6-1.
  • Tubbs opened the fourth inning with a double before scoring when senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) singled to right to make the score 6-2.
  • Unfortunately for the Engineers, Suffolk immediately added three runs in the top of the fifth inning, scoring on singles from Sam Armbruster (Beverly, Mass.) and Flynn and an RBI ground out from Cole Hilliard (Poway, Calif.) to extend the lead to 9-2.
  • MIT scored in each of the final four innings but could not rally past the Rams.
  • Suffolk put the game out of reach in the top of seventh thanks to a grand slam from senior Max Martin (Walpole, Mass.) that made the score 13-3.
  • Trailing 13-3, MIT scored I the bottom of the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly from junior Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel). MIT also added a run on a John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
