NEW LONDON, Conn. — Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) hit a grand slam to lead MIT baseball to a 10-3 victory in game one but Coast Guard countered with a 3-0 victory in game two as the NEWMAC rivals split a pair of conference games on Saturday at Nitchman Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One:
- MIT starting pitcher Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) pitched a career-high six innings, striking out eight to improve to 4-0 with a win in game one. Estrada gave up three runs, two earned, but the MIT offense racked up 10 runs in the opener to help MIT ease to a 10-3 victory.Â
- MIT scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning courtesy of back-to-back RBI singles from John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) and Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) to take a 2-0 lead.
- Coast Guard cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on a Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) RBI groundout.
- MIT answered with a big fourth inning that put the game out of reach. The Engineers scored seven runs on eight hits, hitting a pair of home runs in the inning.
- After hitting a single to open the inning, Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) scored on an error to make the score 3-1. Malone added another RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.Â
- With Malone aboard, Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) singled and John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) was hit by a pitch before Tubbs hit a grand slam to left, as his sixth home run of the season made the score 8-1.
- MIT would bat around, as Moore would add a two run home run later in the inning that made the score 10-1.
- Coast Guard scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-3 but Estrada struck out the final batter in the inning and added another strikeout in the sixth. Senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three to lockdown the win with his fourth save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game Two:
- Coast Guard pitchers John DiMarsico (Severna Park. Md.), Raymond Priddy (Chico, Calif.) and Jackson Dorsey (Newark, Del.) combined to shutout MIT in game two. DiMarsico went the first 4.0 innings, giving up three hits and striking out two.
- Priddy earned the win, pitching 3.0 innings of relief and striking out two. Dorsey closed it out, earning the save while working around a pair of hits in the top of the ninth inning.
- The Bears scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. Coast Guard took advantage of a lead off walk to Connor Cilento (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and a double from Kael Godshalk (Bangor, Pa.), as Carson Cho () singled up the middle to score both players and make the score 2-0.
- Coast Guard also scored in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch.Â
- MIT starter Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs and walking five while striking out four. Reliever Chase Rubin (Haymarket, Va.) went 2.2 innings in relief and did not give up a hit.Â
- Down to its final out in the ninth inning, Dwyer and Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) strung together back-to-back hits to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Hood flied out to right to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Schoenfeld has now hit safely in 11 straight games. With three hits on Saturday he has 216 career hits for MIT.
- With his grand slam in game one, Tubbs homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season. He is now tied for the team lead in RBIs with 29.Â
- Foster and Rubin limited Coast Guard to three hits in game two, while MIT finished with seven hits but could not find a way to add a run to its total.
