CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — First year John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) was 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs and senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) and junior Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) each hit home runs to put the game out of reach, as the MIT baseball team defeated Emerson College, 7-3, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.Â
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 7, Emerson 3
- Records: MIT (13-14 Overall, 8-3 NEWMAC), Emerson (8-17 Overall, 2-9 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Spivey singled with one out in the bottom of the first inning, scoring later in the inning when junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) tagged the ball through the left side for an RBI single.Â
- Leading 1-0, MIT added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 4-0 lead as Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) tallied a sacrifice fly RBI before Spivey singled to score a pair of runs later in the inning.
- MIT starter Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.) pitched the first 2.2 innings, with his only blemish coming in the top of the third when Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.) hit a two-run home run to cut the deficit to two at 4-2.Â
- Spenner got one more out before senior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) entered with one runner aboard. Rapanan surrendered one run to close the book on Spenner but followed with a strong 6.1 innings of work, scattering six hits while striking out four to earn the win.Â
- Leading 4-3, MIT added insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a solo home run from sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.), taking a 5-3 lead thanks to Hernandez's third home run of the season.
- With one out in the eight, CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) reached base with a single up the middle. Soqui then secured the victory with a towering shot to right that made the score 7-3. The home run was also Soqui's third of the season.
