Rhode Island College Outlasts Baseball in Non-Conference Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Fifth year Izaiah Rivera (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and send Rhode Island College (RIC) to an 8-6 victory over the MIT baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Pontarelli Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: RIC 8, MIT 6
  • Records: MIT (13-15 Overall), RIC (11-19 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a scoreless first inning, MIT took a two-run lead thanks to a two-run home run from senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.), as Soqui homered for the second consecutive game and the fourth time this season.
  • MIT extended its advantage to 3-0 in the top of the third inning when junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) scored on an error.
  • The Engineers carried the lead into the fourth inning before RIC scored its first run of the game on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
  • Trailing 3-1, the Anchormen rallied all the way back to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring on an error and on a Cal Parrillo (Greenville, R.I.) RBI single.
  • With the game tied for the first time since the first inning, Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) singled to opened the inning. Two quick MIT outs saw Schoenfeld still at first. However, MIT's right fielder stole second before scoring when the next batter, CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) doubled down the right field line to give MIT the lead again, this time at 4-3.
  • RIC tied the game in the home half of the sixth inning, scoring when Parker Camelo (Bristol, R.I. ) singled with one out. The Anchormen took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh inning, taking advantage of a lead off walk to Parrillo as David Iannuccil (Johnston, R.I.) singled to score Parrillo. RIC moved ahead 6-4 when Iannuccil scored on an errant pick off attempt.
  • Schoenfeld reached base for the fifth time to open the eighth inning, walking before John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) was hit by a pitch. Zev Moore filed out to left but the next batter, McCarthy was also hit by a pitch to load the bases for Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas). Tubbs lifted a fly out to center that allowed two runs to score on the play and tie the game.
  • That set the stage for Rivera in the bottom of the eight, as the RIC shortstop homered to left with one on and one out to give the hosts an 8-6 lead.
  • Sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled to lead off the ninth but the Engineers could not take advantage, as catcher John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) struck out before grad student Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) grounded into a double play to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Schoenfeld finished the game 4-for-4 with a double and a walk, reaching base five times while scoring a pair of runs. He is now three runs scored from matching the MIT program record of 149 and seven hits from matching the program record of 227.
  • MIT used seven pitchers in the contest, with senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) taking the loss after giving up two runs and three hits in 1.1 innings.
  • RIC used eight pitches as Jaden Lovell (East Bridgewater, Mass.) earned the win and Iannuccil picked up the save.
  • Soqui's home run was one of his three hits, he has now hit safely in six of his last seven games.
