Big Second Half Propels Women’s Lacrosse to 21-3 Win Over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – MIT generated 11 unanswered goals in the second half, helping it defeat Wheaton College, 21-3, in the final NEWMAC women's lacrosse game of the regular season on Wednesday night. Junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) tallied four goals and three assists, surpassing the single-season assists record of 51 which was set by assistant coach Ana Flooks '19 in 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT recorded six unanswered goals in the first quarter, beginning with junior Gwen Flusche's (Ridgewood, N.J.) player-advantage goal after 40 seconds expired. She went on to complete the hat trick in the period while Thomas produced one goal and three assists.
  • The Engineers continued to pull away in the second stanza as senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) buried a player-down goal, followed by strikes from junior Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) and first-year Alexis Reinard (Nottingham, Pa.).
  • Wheaton recorded the first of three consecutive goals at the 5:33 mark, gradually narrowing the gap to 9-3 with just under two minutes remaining. Pyon quickly replied with a goal of her own shortly before halftime.
  • MIT controlled the action in the second half as it outscored the Lyons, 11-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pyon finished with five goals and one assist while Lam totaled four goals, one assist, and four groundballs.
  • Julianne Flusche compiled two goals, two assists, and six groundballs as she became the 18th player in program history to collect 100 career groundballs.
  • Gwen Flusche registered four goals and seven groundballs while sophomore Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) posted three caused turnovers and one goal.
  • In net, sophomore Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) made four saves in the first half as classmate Christina Fradella (Massapequa, N.Y.) turned away four shots in the second half.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will be the No. 2 seed in the NEWMAC Championship and will host Salve Regina University in a first-round game on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 PM.
