AUSTIN, Texas. - Four members of the MIT women's swimming and diving team have been named to the 2024-25 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Women's Swimming and Diving Team, recognizing their achievements both in the pool and in the classroom.
The Academic All-America Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom.
Senior Kate Augustyn (Eau Claire, Wis.) earned First Team honors after earning Second Team honors last season and Third Team honors in 2022-23. Augustyn, a Biological Engineering major, was a research assistant in the Furst Lab and performed research at the Shalek Lab on single-cell RNA sequencing data and is also a Publicity officer and mentor at MIT SHINE for Girls. Augustyn won two individual national championships and was a member of three relay winning teams at the 2025 NCAA Swim and Dive Championships where she also collected seven more All-America honors to become the program leader with 27.
Sophomore Fiora Beratahani (San Jose, Calif.) joins Augustyn on the First Team as the Mechanical Engineering won her second consecutive NEWMAC Diver of the Year award. Beratahani, who boasts a 4.0 GPA, is an undergraduate researcher at the MIT Myerson Research Group and at the MIT Mechatronics Research Lab. She is also the Baker House Vice President of Facilities. Beratahani captured two more All-America honors this year at the NCAA Championships and was a six-time NEWMAC Diver of the Week.
Junior Annika Naveen (Wynnewood, Pa.) was named a Second Team Academic All-American for the second time in her career. Naveen sports a 3.92 GPA as a Bioengineering major, has been an undergraduate researcher at the Hermann Lab at the MIT Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and at the Woolf Lab at the Boston Children's Hospital Neurobiology Department. She was also a Research Assistant at the Meaney Lab at the University of Pennsylvania Towne School of Engineering. Naveen is also the Director of Pre-Recruitment at the Alpha Phi Sorority and the President of MIT Every Nation Campus. She captured five All-American honors at the National Championship and was a member of the 200 Medley and 200 Free relay National Championship winning teams.
Sophomore Sydney Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) was named to the third team with a 3.92 GPA as a Mechanical Engineering major. She is an undergraduate researcher at the MIT Development Lab where she conducted user-centered research to design a prototype cookstove for refugees in Uganda's Rhino Camp, and was also an undergraduate researcher at the Bioinstrumentation Lab. Additionally, she is a mentor at MIT Maker Works, the Treasurer at the MIT Student Event Board, and the Baker House Executive Board Treasurer. At the 2025 NCAA Championships, she captured the National Championship in the 100-Fly and was a member of the 200 and 400 Free Relay teams which also won National Titles. Overall, Smith was a seven-time All-American at the Championships.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist the College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2024-25 Division III Academic All-America® program.
