Big Fourth Quarter Propels Men’s Lacrosse to 16-10 Victory Over Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – A six-goal run in the fourth quarter created enough of a cushion as MIT went on to defeat Salve Regina University, 16-10, in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) powered the Engineers with three goals, one assist, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 16, Salve Regina 10
  • Records: MIT (7-7 Overall, 5-2 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (11-5 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT gradually built a 4-1 lead as junior Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) accounted for the first two goals of the game for the visitors. However, Salve Regina found the back of the net with 34 seconds remaining.
  • The Seahawks carried the momentum into the second stanza as they went up 5-4 after five minutes elapsed. The Engineers replied with a 5-1 run as tallies by senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) bookended the rally and created a 9-6 edge at halftime.
  • Salve Regina had the upper hand in the third quarter as it outscored MIT, 2-1. Junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) provided the Engineers' lone goal in the frame.
  • A goal from junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) just 37 seconds into the fourth quarter sparked MIT's pivotal six-goal run that resulted in a 16-8 advantage. Campagna went on to score two more times as first-year Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) dished out three assists. Bleil was a factor in the first two goals of the burst as he had an assist on Campagna's blast and then added a solo effort two minutes later.
  • The Seahawks ended their scoring drought with two goals during the last 6:17 of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Bleil finished with four goals and two assists while Campagna registered three goals and two assists.
  • Metalios had a hat trick as senior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) collected five groundballs.
  • Senior Patrick Timons (Woodside, Calif.) posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers while junior goalie Collin Lung (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded seven saves and three groundballs.
