No. 7 Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Johns Hopkins and No. 20 Ithaca

PITTSBURGH, Pa.  – During the final day of the Carnegie Mellon Quad Sponsored By Doubletree Downtown, the No. 7 MIT women's volleyball team fell to No. 4 Johns Hopkins University (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) and No. 20 Ithaca College (13-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) on Saturday.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Scores:
    • No. 4 Johns Hopkins 3, No. 7 MIT 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22)
    • No. 20 Ithaca 3, No. 7 MIT 1 (13-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21)
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (7-2 Overall); No. 4 Johns Hopkins (7-1 Overall); No. 20 Ithaca (5-3 Overall) 
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. Johns Hopkins:
  • Set 1: Following seven ties and one lead change, an ace gave Johns Hopkins a 22-19 lead. Back-to-back kills from Eileen Sadati along with a kill by Claire Underwood tied the set, however, two blocks and an ace helped the Blue Jays post the 25-22 win.
  • Set 2: A kill by Underwood evened the score at 12, but two kills and an ace gave Johns Hopkins some breathing room as it went on to notch a 25-20 victory.
  • Set 3: A 5-1 burst increased the Blue Jays' lead to 20-15. MIT responded with a kill and two aces from Ella Zhou and then a kill by Ali Gibbs. Johns Hopkins picked up the next two points before both teams started trading sideouts, moving the score to 24-21. A hitting error extended the match for the Engineers; however, the Blue Jays countered with a kill to clinch the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zhou totaled 10 kills, eight digs, and two aces while Sadati finished with eight kills.
  • Jessie Trapp contributed seven kills and two blocks as Kayleigh May generated 31 assists and nine digs.
  • Underwood added three blocks while Daphne Gavros collected 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Ithaca:
  • Set 1: Trailing 3-1, a serving error sparked 12-0 run that put MIT ahead for good. The Engineers maintained a comfortable cushion as a kill by Sadati captured a 25-13 victory.
  • Set 2: Ithaca jumped out to a 5-1 lead and had a small cushion throughout the set. MIT came within one point on four occasions, the last at 18-17 on a kill by Trapp. The Bombers responded with a 7-1 spurt to take the set.
  • Set 3: The Engineers built a 10-4 lead after a kill by Zhou. Ithaca countered with a 15-5 run and it later held a 24-18 advantage. A kill by Sadati coupled with a hitting error by the Bombers kept MIT alive, but Ithaca quickly recorded a kill to secure the win.
  • Set 4: Ithaca rattled off five consecutive points to take a 10-7 lead. The Engineers stayed close as they tied the frame twice, the last at 21-21 courtesy of kill by Sadati. The Bombers replied with four unanswered points to win the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sadati amassed 15 kills as Underwood recorded 12 kills while hitting .345.
  • Zhou registered 10 kills and 14 digs while Gibbs had nine kills and two blocks.
  • May tallied 42 assists, a career-high 16 digs, and three blocks.
  • Gavros rounded out MIT with 17 digs and three aces.
