CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – At the three-day MIT Invitational this past weekend, the MIT women's tennis team won three of the six draws that were fielded. Top-seeded
Alaina Kolli and
Artemis Pados captured the doubles title,
Katie Driscoll won the "TIM" consolation bracket, and the duo of
Megan Sun and
Anselma Petrie claimed the "TIM" consolation doubles final. In addition,
Anastasia Samets and Petrie were MIT's recipients of the Sportsmanship Award.
The Engineers, who were ranked No. 8 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll last year, welcomed No. 10 Bowdoin College, No. 12 Amherst College, and No. 15 Tufts University to the DuPont Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Singles:
- Top-seeded Fiona Lee advanced to the quarterfinals where she fell to No. 9 Tina She of Amherst, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
- Saina Deshpande, seeded No. 5, also represented MIT in the quarterfinals but she lost to No. 3 Melanie Woodbury of Tufts, 6-1, 6-3.
- Rayna Li, No. 4 Chloe Zeng, No. 9 Sophia Yang, Pados, and Kolli each advanced to the Round of 16.
- Driscoll captured the "TIM" consolation draw title by defeating Athena Li of Tufts, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
- In the "TIM" consolation bracket, Carley Chen fell to Driscoll, 6-1, 1-6 (10-5) in the quarterfinals.
- In the consolation draw, Alicen Liu and Sophia Min were defeated in the quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Doubles:
- Kolli and Pados battled No. 2 seed Zoe Sun and Isabella Hartung of Bowdoin for an 8-7 (7-5) victory in the title match.
- The duos of Chen and Driscoll, Deshpande and Samets, and Zeng and Lee advanced to the quarterfinals. Chen and Driscoll saw their run end when they were defeated by Kolli and Pados, 8-6.
- Sun and Petrie won the "TIM" consolation bracket by topping Rachel Roth and Katja Jules Viberg of Amherst, 8-3.
- Li and Yang made their way to the semifinals of the consolation draw but lost to Willow Assante-Labash and Suzanne Pogorelec of Bowdoin, 8-5.
