Five Goal First Half Leads No. 13 Women's Soccer to 8-0 Victory Over Smith

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 13 MIT women's soccer team scored five goals in a four-minute, 17-second span in the first half to secure a decisive 8-0 win over Smith College in both teams NEWMAC opener on Roberts Field on Saturday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 8, Smith 0 
  • Records: No. 13 MIT (7-1-0 Overall, 1-0-0 NEWMAC), Smith (0-5-1, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Natalie Barnouw set up Madeline Seebeck for the first goal of the flurry for the Engineers at 16:24 as Seebeck raced down the sideline, got the Smith goalkeeper out of the cage, and put the ball into the far corner for her first goal of the year. 
  • Barnouw made it 2-0 just over 30 seconds later when she corralled the rebound off a save and put the ball into the corner of the net at 17:01. 
  • Maeve Sullivan and Sean Luk connected on the third and fifth goals of the game while Luk scored the fourth for MIT. 
  • Luk sent a looping pass crosspitch to Arianna Doss who gathered control of the ball, spun around her defender and tucked the ball into the corner of the net at 50:49. 
  • Under a minute later, Barnouw got a pass from Sullivan and split the Smith defense, putting a shot right over the corner of the Bear defender and into the upper far corner of the goal at 58:18. 
  • Chloe Dai sent a pass to Lauren Won close in front of the goal where she lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to wrap up the scoring at 63:42.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Barnouw finished with two goals and an assist to give her eight goals and 20 points on the season. 
  • Sullivan added two goals to bring her season total to eight. 
  • Luk contributed five points with a goal and three assists. She now has four goals and a team-high eight assists. 
  • Won scored her third goal of the season with Dai getting her first assist of the season. 
  • Ava Muffoletto moves to 6-0 on the season as she made one save in 45 minutes of play. Kaitlyn Strine also had a save in her 45 minutes of play in the second half.  
  • The eight goals were the most in a game by MIT since September 7, 2019 when the Engineers scored 10 against Bridgewater St.  

UP NEXT: 

  • MIT returns to the field on Saturday, September 27 as the Engineers travel to Wellesley for a 12:00 PM contest. The Bears will play Nichols College on Tuesday, September 23 at 4:00 PM.
