Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 12 Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Road Win Over Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The No. 12 MIT women's soccer team earned its second-straight NEWMAC shutout as the Engineers went on the road and blanked Wellesley College by a 2-0 margin on Saturday afternoon.  
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 2, Wellesley 0 
  • Records: No. 12 MIT (8-1-0 Overall, 2-0-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (4-4-1, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • A corner kick from Leena Mehendale at 7:12 went right to the front of the net where Natalie Barnouw was able to redirect the header into the back of the goal and give the Engineers the early lead. 
  • The Blue defense, along with goaltender Riley McNair, held MIT scoreless the remainder of the half, despite the Engineers taking 11 shots. Ava Muffoletto turned away the lone Wellesley shot on goal in the first half which came at 15:11. 
  • MIT's offense continued to pepper the Blue defense with 14 second half shots. The Engineers got their second goal of the game late in the half off another corner, this one off the foot of Barnouw. Her shot went into traffic in front of the cage where Ella Conopask was able to direct the ball past the defenders into the goal. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • With her goal and assist, Barnouw now has a team-high 23 points with nine goals and five assists.  
  • Mehendale tallied her second assist with Conopask scoring her second goal of the season. 
  • Muffoletto moves to 7-0-0 on the season as she and Maddy Noll combined for the Engineers sixth shutout of the season.  
  • McNair turned away seven MIT shots and is 3-3-1 on the year.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers head to Medford, Mass. for a mid-week matchup against No. 6 Tufts on Wednesday, October 1 at 4:00 PM. The Blue will host Smith on Saturday, October 4 for a 1:00 PM contest.
