WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 16 MIT women's volleyball team kicked off NEWMAC play by defeating WPI, 25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-10 on Tuesday night.
Daphne Gavros paced MIT with 18 digs as she became the 18
th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 16 MIT 3, WPI 1 (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-10)
- Records: No. 16 MIT (9-3 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC); WPI (7-5 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: Six unanswered points that included three kills from Claire Underwood gave MIT a 15-8 lead. WPI trimmed its deficit to four on two occasions, the last at 16-12 courtesy of a kill. However, a kill by Ella Zhou sparked a 9-3 run that helped MIT secure the victory.
- Set 2: MIT gradually built an 11-5 advantage, but WPI stayed close as five ties and three lead changes occurred. Trailing 19-18, a kill by Underwood kicked off a six-point burst by the visitors. However, WPI capitalized on a pair of errors and a kill to come within 24-22. MIT thwarted the late rally with a kill from Eileen Sadati.
- Set 3: WPI established a 10-4 lead and maintained a small cushion before going up 21-12 on an MIT hitting error. Despite the deficit MIT continued to attack as kill by Sadati narrowed the gap to 23-20. WPI reached set point on a block, however, a kill from Underwood extended the frame. WPI countered with a kill to claim the set, 25-21.
- Set 4: MIT captured the first three points and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-10 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Underwood finished with 15 kills, a .444 hitting percentage, and two blocks while Ali Gibbs produced 14 kills and a .345 hitting performance.
- Sadati registered 12 kills followed by 11 from Jessie Trapp.
- Ella Zhou tallied 10 kills, 14 digs, and two aces as Kayleigh May compiled 49 assists, 15 digs, and two blocks.
- Adelyn Wyndham bolstered the defense with 12 digs.
