NEW LONDON, Conn. – No. 16 MIT swept the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17, in NEWMAC women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
Kayleigh May tallied 43 assists, seven digs, and two blocks as she directed an offense that registered a hitting percentage of .359.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 16 MIT 3, Coast Guard 0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-17)
- Records: No. 16 MIT (10-3 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (8-4 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT gradually established a 17-9 advantage after a miscue by Coast Guard. Despite the deficit the Bears continued to attack as a kill brought them within 21-18. After an exchange of points, a hitting error and a kill by Jessie Trapp gave the Engineers set point at 24-19. A hitting error extended the frame but a kill from Claire Underwood secured the win.
- Set 2: Trailing 10-8, a kill by Eileen Sadati sparked an 11-3 run. MIT maintained a small cushion as a serving error resulted in set point at 24-17. A kill and a block kept Coast Guard alive, however, a kill from Trapp thwarted the late rally.
- Set 3: Tied at nine, a kill by Sadati ignited a 12-3 run. The Engineers went on to claim match point at 24-15 on a block by Sadati and Underwood. The Bears capitalized on a pair of miscues, but a kill from Maya Licznerski captured the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Ali Gibbs led all players with 15 kills as she hit .635 and posted three blocks.
- Ella Zhou notched 11 kills, 11 digs, and two aces while Underwood and Sadati both registered 10 kills.
- Daphne Gavros collected a match-high 14 digs.
