No. 19 Field Hockey Defeats University of New England, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 19 MIT field hockey team notched its second shutout of the season after defeating the University of New England, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Meredith Wu and Janie Thomas produced the goals for the Engineers in the non-conference tilt.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 19 MIT 2, UNE 0
  • Records: No. 19 MIT (2-2 Overall); UNE (1-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • During a penalty corner, Wu redirected a pass from Jane Tortorella to put MIT on the board with 1:30 left in the first quarter.
  • After a quiet second quarter that featured only a penalty corner by the Engineers, UNE earned a penalty corner five minutes into the third period. The sequence generated a pair of shots by Makena Valentine, the first getting blocked while the second was saved by goalie Maeve Zimmer.
  • Following a trio of shots and a penalty corner by the hosts, Ella Reeves put a shot on cage for the Nor'easters.
  • However, MIT responded with its second goal of the day in the 40th minute. Audrey Oh dribbled the ball along the far endline and then passed it into the middle of the arc where Thomas hit it to the near post.
  • The Engineers controlled the action during the early stages of the fourth quarter as they earned a penalty corner and tallied three shots, two of which were saved by Savanna Harvey.
  • Stevens almost ended the shutout in the 50th minute, however, Zimmer came up with the save.
