BOSTON, Mass. – A 15-3 run that featured a 13-of-14 performance at the free throw line in the fourth quarter helped MIT pull away for a 69-58 win at Emerson College in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night.
Ruth Lanouette led the Engineers with 17 points, grabbed a game-high six steals, and added six rebounds.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 69, Emerson 58
- Records: MIT (8-10 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC); Emerson (12-6 Overall, 3-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT raced out to a 14-4 lead as Mary Lobon accounted for eight points. Emerson countered with a 9-2 run in a span of 2:18, but layups by Brianna Lebrun and Rachael Zacks increased the Engineers' advantage to 20-13 at the end of the opening frame.
- The visitors carried the momentum into the second quarter as they generated 10 unanswered points over the course of 5:35. The Lions replied with an 8-2 run, narrowing the gap to 32-21 at halftime.
- MIT maintained its comfortable cushion as its lead grew to 45-28 on a layup by Riley O'Sullivan at the 3:54 mark. However, Emerson closed out the third quarter with a 14-5 run that brought it within 50-42.
- The Lions continued to chip away at their deficit as a three pointer closed the gap to 54-52 with 6:45 left to play. Lanouette converted both free throw attempts during the Engineers' ensuing possession and O'Sullivan, in a pair of trips to the charity stripe, helped move the score to 60-52 with just over four minutes to go. Emerson quickly knocked down a three pointer, but MIT rattled off nine straight points as a 7-of-8 performance at the free throw line thwarted the comeback attempt.
