Women’s Basketball Tops Salve Regina, 66-54

NEWPORT, R.I. – A pair of runs helped the MIT women's basketball team capture a 66-54 victory at Salve Regina University in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. Ruth Lanouette led all players with 29 points as she was 8-of-15 from the floor and 13-of-16 at the free throw line.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 66, Salve Regina 54
  • Records: MIT (9-10 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (6-13 Overall, 0-5 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A layup by Riley O'Sullivan and then a three-point play from Lanouette put MIT in front, 10-7, as it went on to end the opening frame with a 13-11 edge.
  • The Engineers kicked off the second stanza with 11 unanswered points during the first six minutes before going on to enter halftime with a 28-18 advantage.
  • After trading baskets, two free throws by Lanouette increased the lead to 32-22 at the 8:51 mark. Salve Regina stayed close as two free throws brought it within 38-33 with 3:55 on the clock. MIT responded with a layup from Lanouette which sparked an 11-4 run that ended the quarter.
  • The Engineers maintained their comfortable cushion until two free throws by the Seahawks narrowed the gap to 57-50 with 2:04 left to play. Lanouette replied with a jumper, thwarting the comeback attempt as MIT went on to capture the 66-54 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Mary Lobon collected 15 rebounds and two blocks while Brianna Lebrun generated 13 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two steals off the bench.
  • Rachael Zacks recorded seven points and five rebounds as Lanouette added six rebounds and three assists.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will host Wellesley College on Wednesday, February 4 at 8:00 PM in a NEWMAC tilt.
