Men's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Contest at UMass Dartmouth, 84-72

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Michael Zhang scored a game-high 20 points, but the MIT men's basketball team dropped an 84-72 decision to UMass Dartmouth in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.

All five starters finished in double figures for UMass Dartmouth in the victory, paced by Camden Dunbury's 17-point, 11-rebound double-double. The hosts took control late to seize the victory following a back-and-forth contest.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: UMass Dartmouth 84, MIT 72 
  • Records: UMass Dartmouth 7-4 overall, MIT 4-7 overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT got out to an early lead, taking a 12-6 advantage after Isaac Dobie hit a pair of free throws at 15:52 of the first.  
  • The Corsairs erased the advantage over the next three minutes of play, tying the score at 12-12 when Darius Peterson dropped in a layup at 12:38. A steal and score by Camden Dichiara two possessions later moved UMass Dartmouth ahead, 14-12, at the 11:41 mark of the first. 
  • The hosts carried the lead until the 6:48 mark when Parker Spann found Zhang in the paint for a layup to put MIT up 19-18. MIT's advantage would grow to as many as seven points, when Rome Delgado-Gonzalez made the score 27-20 with 3:00 left before the half, but UMass Dartmouth closed out the half on a 14-2 run to move ahead 34-29 inside the final minute of play.  
  • An MIT layup from Spann with 17 seconds to play in the first sent the teams to the break with the Corsairs leading, 34-31. 
  • UMass Dartmouth outscored MIT, 50-41, in the second half to secure the victory. After outscoring MIT 14-4 over the final 2:45 of the first half, UMass Dartmouth used a 7-2 run early in the second half to stretch its advantage to eight points.  
  • The Corsairs carried the lead until the 12:22 mark when a tip-in put-back by Dobie gave MIT a 50-49 advantage. 
  • MIT stretched its lead to five on an and-one layup and free throw from Delgado-Gonzalez at 9:49, taking a 57-52 lead just past the midway point of the second half. The Engineers continued to lead until the 6:41 mark when UMass Dartmouth wrestled the lead back, 62-61, following a layup from Nic Boyd. 
  • The lead went back and forth over the next few possessions before the Corsairs took control of the game over the final 5:27 of regulation. 
  • UMass Dartmouth outscored MIT 17-6 over the final five and a half minutes of play as the hosts took their largest lead of the day, 84-72, when Dunbury closed out the game with a dunk.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Spann scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds in his first appearance of the season for MIT.  
  • Dobie and Delgado-Gonzalez joined Spann and Zhang in double figures, with Dobie scoring 14 points and Delgado-Gonzalez adding 13. 
  • Boyd had 16 points for UMass Dartmouth, while McNair added 14 and DiChiara had 13. Danny Reyes also added 12 points. 
  • MIT finished the game shooting 43.1% from the field while the Corsairs were 42.4% shooting.  
  • UMass Dartmouth had the advantage on the glass, 40-31.
  • The game included five tie scores and 10 lead changes.
