WALTHAM, Mass. – In its return to competition, the No. 5 MIT men's fencing team produced a 3-1 record at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Saturday. The Engineers defeated Hunter College (26-1), Stevens Institute of Technology (17-10), and New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10) but fell to No. 1/No. 13 (NC) NYU, 18-9.
Zachary Tong won all eight of his sabre bouts,
Andy Zhang and
Henry Zhang both compiled 9-3 records in foil, and
Rishi Shiv and
Corey Zhao both finished at 6-6 to lead the epee contingent.

HOW IT HAPPENED – EPEE:
- The epee team posted a 16-20 record, highlighted by a 9-0 performance against Hunter.
- Shiv won all three bouts versus Hunter, went 2-1 against Stevens, and picked up a victory against NYU.
- Zhao swept his opponents from Hunter, posted a 2-1 mark versus NJIT, and added a win against Stevens.
- Alec Zhang went 4-8 as he generated a 3-0 total versus Hunter and defeated an opponent from NJIT.
HOW IT HAPPENED – FOIL:
- The foil team generated a 25-11 record that featured a 9-0 outing versus Hunter and 7-2 ledgers against Stevens and NJIT.
- Andy Zhang defeated all three opponents from Hunter, Stevens, and NJIT as his only losses were against NYU.
- Henry Zhang swept his foes from Hunter and Stevens, posted a 2-1 mark against NJIT, and added a victory versus NYU.
- Niles Liu ended the day with a 7-5 total as he won all three bouts against Hunter, went 2-1 versus NJIT, and registered a victory against NYU and Stevens.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SABRE:
- The sabre team amassed a 27-9 ledger as the squad went 8-1 versus Hunter, 7-2 against Stevens and NJIT, and edged out NYU, 5-4.
- Tong won all three bouts against NJIT, defeated a pair of opponents from Hunter and NYU, and earned a victory versus Stevens.
- Eric Wang generated a 9-1 record that featured 3-0 outings against Stevens and NJIT, a 2-0 tally versus Hunter, and a 1-1 performance against NYU.
- Surya Sakhamuri finished at 6-3 as he topped both opponents from Hunter and NYU and notched a victory against Stevens and NJIT.
- Rohan Dalal went 3-2 as won both of his bouts versus Stevens and defeated his lone foe from Hunter but came up short against NYU and NJIT.
- Henry Smith had a 1-1 outing as he had a victory against Hunter but lost to NYU.
- Brendon Murphy finished at 0-2 following losses to Hunter and NYU.
