CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT rattled off 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to go ahead for good en route to a 59-49 victory over Wellesley College in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night. One of three players to reach double-digits in scoring for the Engineers,
Riley O'Sullivan generated 13 points and six rebounds. Ava Shane led all players with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Blue.
THE BASICS:
- Score: MIT 59, Wellesley 49
- Records: MIT (10-10 Overall, 4-2 NEWMAC); Wellesley (9-10 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT opened the game with eight straight points, but Wellesley narrowed the gap to 12-9 courtesy of Stacy Chen's layup at the end of the quarter.
- Back-to-back layups by Mary Lobon early in the second stanza created some breathing room. However, the Blue came within three points on three occasions, the last at 24-21 on a jumper by Else Kunze-Hoeg with 2:55 on the clock. O'Sullivan replied with a three pointer, but Shane countered with a jumper to make the score 27-23 at halftime.
- Olivia Joseph kicked off the third quarter with a trey; however, Wellesley stayed close and eventually went in front at 39-38 following back-to-back layups from Trinity Barrow with 1:07 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch, resulting in a 41-40 edge for the Blue.
- Proud Techarungchaikul increased the visitors' lead with a layup 38 seconds into the fourth quarter. After exchanging possessions, a jumper by Brianna Lebrun sparked the pivotal 10-0 run which gave MIT a 50-43 advantage with 4:36 left to play.
- Barrow countered with a jumper during Wellesley's next trip down the court, but Ruth Lanouette replied with a free throw and then a three pointer to establish a 54-45 margin at the 3:22 mark. Tanvi Agarwal quickly knocked down a shot from beyond the arc; however, this was as close as it would get as the Engineers went 5-of-6 at the free throw line to secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lebrun posted 13 points, with seven coming during the 10-0 run, and added seven rebounds while Lobon tallied nine rebounds, seven points, three blocks, two steals, and two assists.
- Lanouette ended the night with 12 points, three assists, two steals, and a block.
- Barrow generated 13 points, six assists, and three steals in 40 minutes of action for the Blue.
UP NEXT:
- Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, February 7 against NEWMAC foes. MIT will host Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 PM while Wellesley will travel to Babson College for a 3:00 PM tip off.
