Field Hockey Blanks Salve Regina, 2-0; Remains Undefeated in NEWMAC Play

NEWPORT, R.I. – Meredith Wu was a factor in both of MIT's goals as it defeated Salve Regina University, 2-0, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Engineers improved to 7-5 on the year and 5-0 in the conference, becoming the only undefeated team in the NEWMAC standings.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 2, Salve Regina 0
  • Records: MIT (7-5 Overall, 5-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (7-5 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT had the upper hand in the opening frame as it produced eight shots (four on goal) and four penalty corners. However, Salve Regina made a late surge as a penalty corner with 40 seconds left resulted in a blocked shot.
  • The Engineers continued to control the action, and they eventually got on the scoreboard with 5:40 remaining before halftime courtesy of a blast from Ingrid Tomovski that was set up by Wu during a penalty corner.
  • MIT earned a penalty corner one minute into the third quarter, however, over the course of the next two minutes Salve Regina received two penalty corners that generated a shot which was saved by Alexia Ninios and one that was wide. The remainder of the frame was a midfield battle except for a pair of shots by Salve Regina.
  • The Engineers dominated the fourth quarter on the offensive end, and it resulted in an insurance goal with 6:57 left to play. Leaya Cleary passed the ball from the endline just beyond the far post to the middle of the circle where Wu lifted a shot over goalie Siany Ortez's shoulder.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ninios turned away one shot as she registered her sixth shutout of the year, which is tied for sixth all-time at MIT. Ortez, meanwhile, finished with 11 saves.
  • The Engineers led the way in shots (23-5), shots on goal (13-1), and penalty corners (12-3).
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will host Western New England University on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 PM.
