Field Hockey Defeats Western New England, 5-4, in Overtime

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Western New England University generated three goals in a span of five minutes during the fourth quarter to force overtime, however, Audrey Oh netted the game winner with 1:50 remaining in the extra session to give the MIT field hockey team a 5-4 non-conference victory on Wednesday night. Ingrid Tomovski generated two goals and two assists for the Engineers while Mikayla Mrzywka led the Golden Bears with two goals and one assist.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 5, Western New England 4 (OT)
  • Records: MIT (8-5 Overall); Western New England (8-5 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT opened the game with three goals in the first 6:42 of action. Jane Tortorella put the Engineers on the scoreboard after 1:31 elapsed by redirecting a strike by Tomovski. Tomovski followed by putting in the rebound of her previously saved shot and then she capped the scoring burst by connecting on feeds from Meredith Wu and Remy Caspar during a penalty corner.
  • Western New England ended the shutout with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter when Mrzywka slipped the ball to Maddie Ripley who struck it from the top of the circle to the far post.
  • Although the Engineers had advantages in shots (10-0), shots on goal (3-0), and penalty corners (3-0) during the third quarter, the score remained unchanged.
  • MIT ended the stalemate and increased its lead to 4-1 during a penalty corner just 1:33 into the fourth quarter. Drew Hussar sent the ball through a crowd, and it was tapped in by Wu at the near post.
  • Despite the deficit, the Golden Bears continued to attack with Mrzywka starting the rally by flipping the ball into the top of the cage with 8:58 to go. Abigail Petrini cut the visitors' deficit in half with 5:42 on the clock as she collected a pass at the top of the circle and then went around goalie Alexia Ninios for the goal. Mrzywka followed with the equalizer courtesy of a feed from Petrini with 3:34 remaining.
  • The Engineers put together a final surge down the stretch as they were awarded four penalty corners, two of which resulted in shots on goal, but they couldn't find the back of the cage.
  • MIT had the upper hand in overtime, including a player advantage due to a green card, but it would take until there was 1:50 left in the session to break through. During the hosts' fifth penalty corner, Tomovski sent a pass across the circle to Oh who buried it for the victory.
