Women’s Tennis Competes at NEWITT Championship, Petrie Receives Sportsmanship Award

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.  – The MIT women's tennis team had a solid showing at the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament this past weekend at Smith College and Amherst College. Three of the Engineers' four entries advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets and Anselma Petrie was the recipient of the Christine Davis Sportsmanship Award. In addition, Anastasia Samets recorded the 100th victory of her career, becoming the 10th player in program history to accomplish this feat.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – "A" Draw:
  • Recipients of a first-round bye, top-seeded Sophia Yang and Claire Zhou won their singles matches against Williams but dropped the doubles match, 6-1. In the semifinals, Yang defeated Greta Stechsculte of Amherst, 6-1, 6-3, for the duo's lone point of the match.
  • The trio of Katie Driscoll, Rayna Li, and Samets swept Smith in the first round and then defeated Middlebury. Li won her singles match against Lily Dounchis of Amherst, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals but that would be the only point for the squad.
  • Chloe Zeng and Carley Chen defeated Williams, 2-1, in the opening round but lost to Amherst, 1-2, as Chen defeated Dounchis, 6-2, 6-2, in their singles match. The duo swept Middlebury in a playoff and then defeated Williams in the fifth-place match. Zeng and Chen topped Ayanna Varma and Kate Kendall, 6-3, in doubles action while Zeng added a singles win of 6-4, 6-4 against Varma.
HOW IT HAPPENED – "B" Draw:
  • Petrie, Michelle Ge, and Nishi Gandra collaborated for 2-1 victories over Gordon and Wellesley in the first round and the quarterfinals. However, their run came to an end due to a tough 3-0 loss against Williams. Ge and Gandra were edged out by Margaux Molyneux and Katelyn Wu, 6-4, in doubles action, Petrie fell to Wu in a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 battle, while Molyneux topped Ge, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
UP NEXT:
  • Yang and Zhou will represent MIT at the ITA Cup which will be held October 15-18 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.
