CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – At the three-day MIT Invitational this past weekend, the MIT women's tennis team was represented in the finals of four of the six draws that were fielded, highlighted by the victory of
Anastasia Samets and
Katie Driscoll in the doubles consolation bracket. In addition, Driscoll was MIT's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
The Engineers, who were ranked No. 10 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll last year, welcomed No. 8 Bowdoin College, No. 16 Amherst College, and No. 20 Tufts University to the DuPont Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Singles:
- No. 5 seeded Sophia Yang advanced to the quarterfinals where she fell to top-seeded Tina She of Amherst, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
- In her intercollegiate debut, Claire Zhou earned a spot in the quarterfinals but was defeated by No. 2 seed Athena Li of Tufts, 6-3, 6-1.
- Driscoll fell to No. 2 seed Melanie Woodbury of Tufts, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 in a quarterfinal battle.
- In the round of 16, Rayna Li dropped a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 match to No. 4 seed Caroline Stuhlfaut of Bowdoin.
- Chloe Zeng advanced to the finals of the "TIM" consolation draw but lost to Nadia Khera of Tufts, 6-1, 6-2.
- In the quarterfinals of the consolation draw, Anselma Petrie lost to Pavith Khara of Bowdoin, 7-5, 6-4.
- In the consolation draw Round of 16, Carley Chen fell to No. 5 seed Zoe Sun of Bowdoin, 6-3, 6-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Doubles:
- In the championship of the main draw, No. 3 seeded Zeng and Chen fell to top-seeded Tina She and Lily Dounchis of Amherst, 8-3.
- Anastasia Samets and Driscoll defeated Brooklyn Bindas and Athena Li of Tufts, 8-4, in the consolation bracket final.
- Yang and Zhou claimed a slot in the "TIM" consolation finals, but Kyra McCandless and Alyssa Zhou of Tufts clinched the title courtesy of a walkover.
- In the consolation bracket Round of 16, Nishi Gandra and Petrie fell to Naomi Williams and Pavith Khara of Bowdoin, 8-3.
- Li and Michelle Ge secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket; however, Williams and Khara advanced due to a walkover.
