BRUNSWICK, Maine – Competing at the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championship this weekend at Bowdoin College, the MIT women's tennis team had a program-record four entries advance to the semifinals of their respective draws.
Sophia Yang and
Claire Zhou were finalists in the doubles bracket, advancing to the title match after a semifinal victory against teammates
Katie Driscoll and
Anastasia Samets. Meanwhile, Driscoll and Yang represented the Engineers in the semifinals of the singles "A" draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Singles "A" Draw:
- After defeating No. 9-16 seed Zoe Sun of Bowdoin in the Round of 16 (1-6, 6-4, 10-6) and top-seeded Sandra Sikharulidze of Babson in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-4), No. 8 seeded Driscoll fell to No. 5 Mariia Kornilova of Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.
- Seeded No. 9-16, Yang lost to No. 2 Tina She of Amherst, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals.
- Rayna Li, seeded No. 9-16, dropped a tough 7-6 (6), 4-6, 10-8 decision to Julia Ross of Bowdoin in the Round of 16.
- Following a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 6 seed Caroline Stuhlfaut of Bowdoin in the Round of 64, Zhou lost a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 battle to Kendall Smith of Wesleyan in the Round of 32.
- Chloe Zeng was defeated by Te'Anna Mata of Babson, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, in the Round of 64.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Singles "B" Draw:
- Recipient of a first-round bye, No. 3 seed Michelle Ge fell to Avni Bakre of Bates, 8-5, in the Round of 32.
- In the Round of 64, Samets was edged out by Katherine Johnson of Trinity, 8-6, while Nishi Gandra fell to No. 9-16 seed Lily Back of Tufts, 8-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Doubles:
- In the all-MIT semifinal, No. 9-16 Yang and Zhou outlasted No. 5 Driscoll and Samets, 8-6. However, Yang and Zhou fell to No. 6 Caroline Stuhlfaut and Zoe Sun of Bowdoin, 6-2, 6-1, in the title match.
- Recipients of a bye, No. 9-16 Zeng and Li fell to Zoe Yao and Katelyn Wu of Williams, 8-6, in the Round of 32.
- Gandra and Ge were defeated by Diya Pachumuthu and Caitlin Chen of Middlebury, 8-1, in the Round of 48.
