Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Tops Wheaton, 3-1, on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of goals during the first five minutes of the third quarter created enough of a cushion as MIT went on to defeat Wheaton College, 3-1, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Ingrid Tomovski registered two goals for the Engineers while Hannah Fortin scored the lone goal for the Lyons.

Prior to the start of the game, Tomovski along with fellow seniors Jane Tortorella, Janie Thomas, Sammi Blocher, and Audrey Oh and graduate student Grace Johnson were celebrated for their contributions to the MIT field hockey program.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 3, Wheaton 1
  • Records: MIT (9-5 Overall, 6-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton (8-6 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT controlled the action in the opening frame as it had advantages in shots (5-0), shots on goal (4-0), and penalty corners (3-0), but the game was a scoreless affair.
  • The Engineers continued to have the upper hand in the second quarter and eventually ended the stalemate courtesy of an unassisted goal by Tomovski in the 23rd minute. Wheaton nearly recorded the equalizer twice during the last three minutes of the frame. The first occasion occurred when a dangerous ball in the circle drew goalie Alexia Ninios off her line and resulted in a crowd as both teams battled for possession with players on the ground, but an attempt by the Lyons went out of bounds. With 30 seconds to go, Kayla Wilonski put a shot on goal that was stopped by Ninios.
  • Tomovski created some breathing room for MIT as she found the back of the cage after 1:33 elapsed in the third quarter. The Engineers increased their lead to 3-0 three minutes later when Thomas redirected a feed from Meredith Wu during a penalty corner.
  • Wheaton ended the shutout 3:57 into fourth quarter as pass by Ally Slicer from beyond the circle made its way to Fortin who quickly hit it to the far post.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ninios notched three saves while Grace Ferguson amassed 18 saves. Maddie LaBreck and Carys Mitchell both added a defensive save to the Lyons' effort.
  • MIT led the way in shots (31-4), shots on goal (23-4), and penalty corners (17-2).
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams will host NEWMAC games on Tuesday, October 20. MIT will face WPI at 6:00 PM while Wheaton will take on Salve Regina University at 7:00 PM.
