Football Earns 42-21 Runaway Victory Over Coast Guard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT football team ran for six touchdowns and racked up 262 yards on the ground on the way to a 42-21 NEWMAC victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on a cool and cloudy Saturday afternoon at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium.

Jimmy Conners paced the running backs with 95 yards and two scores, while halfback Brendan Spellman and quarterback Ryan Treptow each added a pair of scores for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 42, Coast Guard 21
  • Records: MIT (3-2 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (3-3 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Coast Guard quarterback Sean Burns connected with Matthew LaBouliere down the left side of the field for a 37-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the game to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.
  • MIT responded with the first of four first half touchdowns on its opening drive. Conners and Treptow helped the Engineers march 61 yards down the field in six plays, a mix of three Conners runs and three completions from Treptow that included a short six-yard completion to Conners. Conners ended the drive with a 12-yard rush up the middle for a score at 10:05.
  • The Engineers defense forced the Bears into a three-and-out on the next Coast Guard drive, as Chase Fishman and Thomas Shoales emphatically ended the drive with a sack on third and nine.
  • With the ball back in the hands of Treptow and the offense, this time it was Brendan Spellman's chance to run out of the MIT backfield. Treptow completed three passes, including a 39-yard completion to Preston Dinh, and Spellman ran the ball three times, including a nine-yard touchdown run that made the score 14-7 at 4:52.
  • MIT carried the 14-7 lead into the second quarter in the midst of a ten-play 65-yard drive that ended with seven points at the start of the second quarter. Treptow completed the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run.
  • The Bears pulled back within a score thanks to Coast Guard's best drive of the game in the second quarter, a 14-play, 81-yard effort that saw Burns connect with LaBouliere for a nice touchdown grab on the left side of the end zone.
  • Coast Guard forced MIT into a three-and-out on its next drive before taking over at its own 18-yard line with 3:23 left in the half. The Bears moved the ball to the 27-yard line before being faced with a fourth-and-one. The visitors elected to go for it but Eric Anderson made the stop for MIT, pulling down Burns for a six-yard tackle for loss that forced a turnover on downs.
  • MIT took full advantage of the short field. Conners rushed the ball three times to move it to the Coast Guard five-yard line. A false start pushed MIT back but Treptow found the end zone two plays later for a ten-yard touchdown rush that gave MIT a 28-14 lead with six seconds left before the half.
  • The Engineers received the second half kickoff, but it was the team's second drive of the half that effectively put the game out of reach when Spellman scored for the second time on a 15-yard rush around the right end that put MIT up 35-14 at 8:33.
  • Coast Guard got the touchdown back on its next drive, when Burns again found LaBouliere on the left side of the end zone, to trail 35-21 at 4:37.
  • MIT continued to lead by two scores as the game entered the fourth quarter. The Engineers moved ahead 42-21 at 10:38 of the fourth thanks to Conners' second score of the game. Conners' rushing score capped an eight-play, 63-yard drive.
  • The MIT defense finished off the day, ending the final two Coast Guard drives on downs and with a punt.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Conners now has five touchdowns in five games this season and eight in his career.
  • Treptow now has ten touchdowns through his first five games, with six coming through the air and four on the ground.
  • Thomas Shoales paced the defense with 11 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks in the game.
  • MIT's special teams effort included a blocked punt by Kyle Jackson in the third quarter.
