Football Shuts Down Salve Regina to Earn 17-7 NEWMAC Road Victory

NEWPORT, R.I. – Joshua Tang and Connor McHale each recorded interceptions, Jimmy Conners tallied 117 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Wyatt Alford sealed the game with a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter to lead the MIT football team to a 17-7 NEWMAC victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 17, Salve Regina 7
  • Records: MIT (4-2 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (4-3 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a scoreless first quarter, MIT scored the first half's only touchdown on a 10-yard Leo Mont touchdown rush at 5:27 of the second quarter. The Engineers started the drive at midfield following a short Salve punt. After moving the ball on a pair of five and six-yard runs from Mont, Ryan Treptow connected with Dash Havens for a 31-yard completion on 3rd and 10 to move the ball to the 10-yard line. Mont scored on the next play from scrimmage.
  • The Engineers carried the 7-0 lead into halftime thanks to McHale, who ended the next Seahawks drive after seven plays and 40 yards when he picked off Salve Regina quarterback Padraig Brown in the end zone.
  • Following the touchback, MIT had just 1:55 to move the ball into scoring position. Treptow pushed the offense to the MIT 43-yard line but the Engineers were ultimately forced to punt with 28 seconds left in the half. Salve would move the ball into MIT territory but run out of time before the half.
  • The defenses locked in to start the second half, with both teams forced to punt on multiple drives. However, MIT's final drive of the quarter yielded points thanks to an interception from Tang that set MIT up at midfield.
  • Following an MIT punt at 3:09, the first play of the ensuing Salve Regina drive was intercepted by Tang at the MIT 48-yard line to give the ball right back to Treptow and the Engineers' offense. Treptow connected with Ezekiel Dube-Garrett for 11 yards on 3rd and 10 to extend following two plays for no gain to start the drive.
  • A pair of incompletions and short runs following the 11-yard gain saw MIT facing 4th and 1 but Jimmy Conners broke away for a 32-yard rushing score to put MIT up 14-0 with eight seconds to play before the fourth quarter.
  • The Engineers added three more points at 10:15 of the fourth quarter to move ahead 17-0. Willem van Roijen connected on a field goal from 27 yards out to end a short seven play drive.
  • Faced with its biggest deficit of the day, Salve got on the board on its next drive when Brown completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Chapman at 8:39. The Seahawks followed the touchdown by recovering an onside kick to get the ball back at their own 48-yard line.
  • The hosts moved the ball to the MIT 21-yard line but saw their momentum come to a halt with a fumble on first and ten that was forced and recovered by Wyatt Alford and the MIT defense.
  • MIT's final drive of the contest didn't post any points but it sealed the game with a 16 play, 79-yard effort that returned the ball to the Seahawks on their own one yard line with just eight seconds to play.
