Football Falls to Merchant Marine, 43-7

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy quarterback Bubba Mustain threw for three touchdowns, including a pair to wide receiver Angelo Cimino, and added two more on the ground to lead the visiting Mariners to a 43-7 NEWMAC victory over the MIT football team on Saturday afternoon at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Merchant Marine 43, MIT 7
  • Records: MIT (2-2 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC); Merchant Marine (4-0 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Merchant Marine scored ten points in the opening quarter and never trailed in the game. A 32-yard field goal from Karson Bye put the visitors ahead 3-0 at 9:01 of the first.
  • The Mariners forced MIT to go three-and-out on its next drive and followed with a methodical 14-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a one-yard crash over the goal line by Mustain with 15 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Trailing 10-0, MIT got just what it needed on the ensuing kickoff. Rookie Willem van Roijen returned the ball 40 yards to midfield to set up Ryan Treptow and the MIT offense. Treptow moved the Engineers across the other half of the field on 11 plays, ending the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown of his own to make the score 10-7 at 9:42 of the second.
  • Merchant Marine countered quickly on the next drive, with Mustain finding his favorite target Cimino down the left sideline for a 53-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the drive to move Merchant Marine ahead, 17-7.
  • The Engineers countered with another strong drive. Treptow completed six passes over 11 plays to help move the ball inside the red zone. With first-and-ten at the Merchant Marine 16-yard line, MIT looked poised to add another score. Treptow connected with Michael Dennison for a short four-yard gain to move the ball to the 12-yard line. However, Treptow's next attempt toward Preston Dinh at the goal line was intercepted by Merchant Marine's Blake Bishop, putting an abrupt halt to a promising MIT drive.
  • Bishop's interception was the defining defensive play of the game, as it ended MIT's drive and ignited an eight-play, 97-yard Merchant Marine touchdown drive that gave the visitors a 24-7 lead just before halftime when Mustain scored his second rushing touchdown on the day.
  • The Mariners received the opening kickoff of the second half and took advantage to make the score 30-7. On first-and-ten from the MIT 27-yard line, Mustain found Sonny Endicott open across the middle of the field for a catch and score.
  • The Engineers continued to move the ball but once again were frustrated at the end of a productive drive. The Engineers moved the ball to the goal line before a holding penalty bumped the drive back to the 19-yard line. Faced with third and long, MIT took two attempts at the end zone but came away empty-handed on downs.
  • Merchant Marine took advantage again thanks to Mustain and Cimino, as a 23-yard touchdown pass made the score 37-7. Endicott added a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Mariners to secure the 43-7 scoreline.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT receiver Keegan Doody was held without a touchdown for the first time this season, but he was the team's leading receiver with 71 yards and eight receptions.
  • Treptow was 18-of-23 for 154 yards and one interception for MIT.
  • Cimino finished the game with 146 yards receiving on nine receptions for Merchant Marine.
  • Merchant Marine amassed 462 yards of total offense and recorded 25 first downs.
  • Merchant Marine scored on all three of its attempts in the red zone while MIT was just 1-for-3.
  • Merchant Marine now leads the all-time series, 7-2.
