Janie Thomas Goal Lifts Field Hockey to 1-0 Win Over Springfield

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Janie Thomas scored with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter and it was all MIT would need as it went on to defeat Springfield College, 1-0, in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday at Jack Barry Field.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 1, Springfield 0
  • Records: MIT (5-5 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Springfield (6-4 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT controlled the action as it produced an 11-0 advantage in shots and an 8-0 margin in penalty corners. However, Sam Orcutt made five saves, and Emma Kibbe added a defensive save before the Engineers ended the scoreless affair with 1:43 left before halftime. On a restart beyond MIT's attacking 23-meter line, Grace Johnson sent the ball into the circle, and it was corralled by Thomas who quickly turned and placed her shot inside the near post.
  • The Engineers continued to have the upper hand, but Springfield made a push during the last two minutes of play as they kept the hosts in their defensive end. However, the Pride couldn't record the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Alexia Ninios was not forced to make a save as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season while Orcutt ended the day with seven saves.
  • MIT led the way in shots (20-1), shots on goal (9-0), and penalty corners (16-0).
UP NEXT:
