CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a battle of nationally-ranked top 10 teams, No. 9 MIT emerged with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 victory over No. 2 Colby College in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Saturday afternoon in Rockwell Cage.
Sophia Song led all players with 17 digs and contributed to a defense that limited the Mules to a .080 hitting percentage. Brady Moseley led the way for the visitors with nine kills and 11 digs.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 9 MIT 3, No. 2 Colby 0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-21)
- Records: No. 9 MIT (12-1 Overall); No. 2 Colby (10-2 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: MIT built a 5-1 lead, but Colby tied the score five times, the last at 17-17 on a kill from Moseley. Sparked by a kill from Julia Tolstova, the Engineers put together a 7-2 run as a hitting error gave the hosts set point. A kill by Brianna Hazak extended the frame, however, another Tolstova kill secured the 25-20 win.
- Set 2: After conceding the opening point, MIT won the next five before going on to capture a 25-13 victory on an ace by Kayleigh May.
- Set 3: The Mules jumped out to a 5-1 lead after back-to-back kills by Moseley. The Engineers stayed close as they tied the set four times, but Colby increased its advantage to 16-12 courtesy of a hitting error. MIT responded with a 12-3 run as a kill from Eileen Sadati resulted in match point at 24-19. The Mules used a serving error and a Jordan Lee ace to stay alive, however, a kill by Sabine Smith clinched the come-from-behind win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Smith had a match-high 14 kills and four aces while Sadati finished with 10 kills.
- Tolstova posted nine kills and 11 digs as May registered 32 assists and four aces.
- Evelyn Kunde contributed seven kills to Colby's attack while Reese Loyd paced the squad with 12 digs.
- Sydney DeProfio dished out 13 assists, followed by 10 from Gabby Grujic.
