Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 1 WashU Holds Off No. 5 Women's Soccer, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a rematch of last year's NCAA Round of 16 matchup, the No. 5 MIT women's soccer team took on top-ranked and the two-time defending National Champion Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon on Roberts Field.

The Bears struck early before the Engineers leveled the match late in the first half. WashU regained the lead on a second-half penalty kick and held on for a 2-1 victory to remain unbeaten this season.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: WashU 2, MIT 1
  • Records: No. 5 MIT (9-2-1 Overall), No. 1 WashU (11-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WashU generated three scoring chances in the opening five minutes. The first came on a shot from Keira Smyser that was saved by Maddy Noll. Moments later, a strike from Madi Foley hit the post, and the rebound fell to Olivia Clemons, whose attempt went wide.
  • The Bears broke through in the ninth minute when a corner kick from Smyser found Monica Morales-Martinez. Her initial shot hit the post, but she collected the rebound and converted at the 8:56 mark for a 1-0 advantage.
  • MIT responded with a pair of quality opportunities from Ayla Sumer and Amara Ukomadu. Sumer's shot was stopped by WashU goalkeeper Kassidy Lanthier, while Ukomadu had a promising chance stopped by a sliding tackle from Grace Harper.
  • Ukomadu eventually found the equalizer in the closing minutes of the first half. After receiving a pass from Chloe Dai, she weaved through multiple defenders and sent a shot inside the far post in the 42nd minute to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The deciding goal came at 56:44 when Sophie Viscovich converted a penalty kick to put the Bears back in front, 2-1.
  • Though the Bears kept the pressure on the Engineer defense, Noll and the back line kept them off the board. Dai and Claire Zhang had chances late to tie the match, but the Bears held on for the 2-1 win.
