No. 6 Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Over Top Spot With Four Wins on Day Two of NEWMAC Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 6 MIT men's swimming and diving team took over the top spot, winning four events on day two of the 2026 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championship. 

STANDINGS:  

  1. MIT – 524.5 Points 
  2. Coast Guard – 364 Points 
  3. WPI – 298.5 Points 

HOW IT HAPPENED:    

  • 200 Free Relay: MIT won the event for the third-consecutive year. Led by Keon McClure on the lead-off leg, Aitor Arrese-Igor and Thomas Wu followed with Bryce Roberts sealing the win to finish with a time of 1:21.51 to defeat second-place Wheaton by .30 seconds.  
  • 500 Free: The Engineers took home the top-three spots led by a 4:29.55 swim from Evan Wong. Mark O'Mara finished second in 4:32.38 followed by John Tietjen in third with a time of 4:36.04. 
  • 200 IM: MIT took spots 1-4 led by Kelson Cantrell who came in with a time of 1:48.61. Jason Wang followed closely with a time of 1:48.95 while Grant Hu (1:49.25) and Nathan Wu (1:51.00) rounded out the top four. 
  • 50 Free: Roberts came in second with a time of 20.29. 
  • 400 Medley Relay: Arrese-Igor, Thomas Wu, Roberts and Kim came away with the win to close day two as the team clocked in with a time of 3:14.74, besting the Coast Guard team which finished in 3:17.75. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Roberts has been a member of the last three 200 Free Relay wins. Arrese-Igor was on the 2025 winning team. McClure grabbed his first all-conference honor with Wu earning his fifth.  
  • This was the first all-conference nod for both Wong and O'Mara. 
  • Wong's time in the 500 is the fifth-fastest in program history. 
  • Cantrell and Wang's times in the 200 IM were faster than last year's invited time. Hu hit an NCAA B Cut time. Cantrell now has the seventh fastest time in program history. 
  • Roberts swam a B Cut time in the 50 free and now has the eighth fastest time in program history. Roberts was also the runner-up in the event last year. 
  • MIT defended its title in the 400 Medley Relay with Arrese-Igor, Roberts and Wu becoming two-time champions. 

UP NEXT:    

  • Day three will begin tomorrow at 10:00 AM at the Zesiger Center with finals starting at 6:00 PM. Events will include the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 1-Meter Dive, and 200 Medley Relay.
