No. 8 Women’s Tennis Falls to Bryant, 5-2, in Spring Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its first match of the spring semester, the No. 8 MIT women's tennis team fell to Division I Bryant University, 5-2, on Friday in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: Bryant 5, No. 8 MIT 2
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (0-1 Overall); Bryant (3-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng won the first two games en route to a 6-1 victory over Lucia Pino and Lisa Dugec in the No. 2 spot.
  • In the No. 3 position, Yahli Noy and Laura Stypula won back-to-back games to take a 5-3 lead. Katie Driscoll and Anastasia Samets won the next game, however, Noy and Stypula came away with the 6-4 win.
  • Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados tied their No. 1 doubles match at 4-4, but Natalia Vela and Maria Jose Hernandez Diaz responded by winning the next two games to capture the doubles point.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • In the No. 1 slot, Noy claimed the first three games against Saina Deshpande before taking the first set, 6-2. After conceding the first game in set two, Noy went on to post a 6-1 victory.
  • The Engineers made the score 2-1 after Chen's 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Hernandez Diaz in the No. 4 position. Trailing 4-3 to Hernandez Diaz, Chen won the next three games to claim the first set. In the second set, Chen battled back from a 4-2 deficit, tying the frame at 4-4, 5-5, and then 6-6. In the tiebreak, Hernandez Diaz had a 6-5 edge, but Chen rallied for the 8-6 victory.
  • Sophia Yang won three games in a row to defeat Mila Martinez Rivero, 7-5, in the opening set and then claimed four of the last five games en route to a 6-3 victory in the No. 5 spot.
  • Driscoll built a 3-1 lead at No. 3 singles, but Stypula rattled off five games in a row to take the set. In the next frame, Driscoll registered back-to-back wins to capture a 6-4 victory. In the third set, Stypula built a 4-1 advantage before recording the 6-3 win.
  • In the No. 2 position, Zeng defeated Vela, 6-1, in the first set. Zeng carried the momentum into the second stanza as she established a 4-1 advantage. However, Vela rallied to go up 6-5 but Zeng forced the tiebreaker which Vela won, 7-4. In a tightly played third set, Vela captured the final three games to secure a 7-5 victory and clinch the match.
  • In a back-and-forth battle during the opening frame in the No. 6 spot, Dugec won three straight games to post a 7-5 victory over Samets. Holding a 3-2 edge in the second set, Dugec claimed three of the last four games for a 6-3 final.
