Late Rally Pushes Skidmore Past Men’s Lacrosse, 14-11, in Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – An 8-1 run helped MIT tie the game at 11 with 5:53 remaining, however, Skidmore generated three goals during the last 1:55 to capture a 14-11 win in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Garrett Campagna paced the Engineers with two goals and three assists while Michael Aiello led the Thoroughbreds with four goals and three assists.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Skidmore 14, MIT 11
  • Records: MIT (0-1 Overall); Skidmore (2-0 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • David Koffler opened the scoring for Skidmore after 41 seconds elapsed, but Bryce Metalios redirected a feed from Campagna for the equalizer at the 12:42 mark. The score remained unchanged until a trio of goals by the Thoroughbreds during the last 3:40 of the quarter, which included man-up strikes by Charlie Schutta and Joseph Killcommons.
  • A man-up goal from Hayden Calabretta that was set up by Metalios brought MIT within 4-2 following 21 seconds of action in the second stanza. A defensive battle ensued until Aiello scored the first of back-to-back goals midway through the period. Campagna narrowed the gap to 6-3 with 5:02 on the clock, however, Conor Geier found the back of net, giving Skidmore a 7-3 lead at halftime.
  • The Thoroughbreds continued to pull away in the third quarter as they produced three goals, including another man-up tally from Killcommons. Sparked by a goal from CJ Sanchez that was set up by Riley Pierce at the 7:20 mark, the Engineers began to chip away at their deficit and eventually tie the game at 11-11 when Campagna connected on a pass from Zach Bleil with 5:53 left in the game.
  • After some back-and-forth play, Skidmore ended the stalemate courtesy of a solo blast from Caleb Lawson with 1:55 remaining. The Thoroughbreds won the ensuing faceoff and then created some breathing room on an unassisted tally from Aiello with a minute on the clock. The visitors produced another faceoff victory that later led to Koffler's man-up marker with 23 seconds to go.
