No. 8 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 29 Skidmore, 6-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first meeting between both teams since the second round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship, No. 8 MIT defeated No. 29 Skidmore College, 6-1, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 8 MIT 6, No. 29 Skidmore 1
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (2-1 Overall); No. 29 Skidmore (1-2 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • After conceding the first game, Saina Deshpande and Katie Driscoll went on to post a 6-1 victory over Margaret English and Maeve O'Brien McKevitt in the No. 3 position.
  • Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng captured the doubles point after defeating Ruth Wilson and Mia Rosenberg, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot. MIT claimed the first three games; however, Skidmore picked up the next two. Chen and Zeng responded by rattling off three straight victories.
  • Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados built a 5-2 advantage in the top slot, but Ginevra Muratori and Amelie Gonzalez rallied for the 7-5 come-from-behind win.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • MIT's first point of the match was a result of a walkover for Anastasia Samets in the No. 6 spot.
  • In the No. 3 position, Rayna Li won the first set, 6-0, against English and then posted a 6-2 decision in the second set.
  • In the No. 5 slot versus O'Brien McKevitt, Anselma Petrie won three straight games to record a 6-2 victory in the first set. She carried the momentum into the second set as she cruised to a 6-0 decision which clinched the match.
  • Sophia Yang won the first four games en route to a 6-1 first-set victory over Gonzalez in the No. 2 position. She then rallied from a 4-3 deficit to register a 6-4 win to take the match.
  • Muratori built a 5-2 lead before holding off Deshpande for a 6-4 win in the first set at No. 1 singles. In a back-and-forth second set, Muratori won three consecutive games to secure a 6-3 victory and post Skidmore's lone point of the day.
  • Alicen Liu wrapped up the match by defeating Wilson, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT returns to action on Friday, March 13 when it travels to No. 23 Brandeis University for a 4:00 PM match.
  • Skidmore will visit No. 14 Amherst College on Sunday, March 1 at 11:00 AM.
