Women’s Basketball Defeats Mount Holyoke, 62-51, for Fifth Straight Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games after defeating Mount Holyoke College, 62-51, in a NEWMAC game on Saturday afternoon in Rockwell Cage. One of three players to reach double-digits in scoring for the Engineers, Deana Prasad led all players with 17 points and two blocks. Alex Twomey powered the Lyons with 15 points, seven steals, and six assists.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 62, Mount Holyoke 51

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mount Holyoke inched out to a 13-7 lead following a jumper by Taryn White with 2:39 on the clock. MIT replied with five straight points, capped by Mary Lobon's tip in at the buzzer.
  • The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as it outscored the Lyons, 20-7, and created a 32-20 advantage at the 3:32 mark. During the run that put MIT ahead for good, Prasad accounted for 12 points.
  • However, a layup from White sparked a string of nine unanswered points that brought Mount Holyoke within 32-29 at halftime.
  • White opened the third quarter with a layup, but a jumper from Riley O'Sullivan sparked a 14-3 run that moved the score to 46-34 with just under three minutes remaining. A three pointer from Ania McMichael ended a 3:31 scoring drought for the Lyons, however, Ruth Lanouette drained a layup with 14 seconds left to reestablish the double-digit margin.
  • Mount Holyoke remained within striking distance as it narrowed the gap to eight points on two occasions, the last at 55-47 on a trey from Sofia Francisco at the 5:30 mark. A defensive battle ensued until a three from Prasad with 3:19 to go kicked off a 7-0 burst that spanned 1:45 and put the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Lobon totaled 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, six assists, and two steals while Lanouette finished with 12 points.
  • White recorded 14 points as Francisco compiled eight rebounds, seven points, and two steals. McMichael bolstered the Lyons' offense with nine points.
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, February 11 against NEWMAC opponents. MIT will travel to Wheaton College for a 7:00 PM tip off while Mount Holyoke will host Springfield College at 7:00 PM.
