CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 3 Tufts University used a seven-goal run in the second quarter to propel it to a 17-6 victory over MIT in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 3 Tufts 17, MIT 6
  • Records: MIT (1-2 Overall); No. 3 Tufts (3-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Helms was a factor in the first three goals of the game as she scored the first two on assists by Schuyler Lloyd and set up Neta Leschly at the 12:19 mark. Butler followed with a free-position goal almost two minutes later, but the game remained scoreless until Sophia Claps found the back of the net with 5:46 left. Butler buried another free-position goal, trimming the deficit to 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Helm sparked the pivotal seven-goal stretch when she connected on a pass from Leschly just over three minutes into the second stanza. Allie Zorn quickly converted a free-position attempt and then found Helm for her fourth goal of the day with 10:09 on the clock. A defensive battle ensued until Claps broke through almost four minutes later, setting off a string of four consecutive goals that established an 11-2 halftime advantage.
  • Gwen Flusche ended MIT's scoring drought at the 8:18 mark of the third quarter, but the Jumbos generated a four-goal burst that increased their lead to 15-3 with 3:26 remaining. The Engineers countered with Annica Lam's player-advantage strike that was set up by Butler.
  • The fourth quarter saw both teams trade goals, resulting in the 17-6 final. Samantha Moorhead redirected a feed from Butler while Lam recorded the final goal of the game with 30 seconds to go. For Tufts, Aynalie Charron notched her second goal of the day as Sonja Keneally capped the scoring for the visitors.
