Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Emerson, 17-9, in NEWMAC Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – MIT used a 7-1 run in the third quarter to pull away for a 17-9 victory over Emerson College in the NEWMAC men's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. Garrett Campagna totaled one goal and three assists for the Engineers, joining Harris Stolzenberg '17 as the only players in program history to eclipse 100 career assists.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 17, Emerson 9
  • Records: MIT (3-3 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC); Emerson (2-6 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT built a 5-1 lead during the first five minutes of the game. Campagna opened the scoring after 46 seconds elapsed and later earned an assist on a blast from Oscar Lindenthal while Bryce Metalios had a hat trick. Emerson countered with two goals during the last 6:16 of the opening quarter, including a man-up marker with eight seconds left.
  • Riley Pierce increased the Engineers' advantage to 6-3 after 2:19 elapsed in the second stanza. The score remained unchanged until Metalios redirected a feed from Daniel Jones with 3:06 on the clock. The Lions replied with a goal of their own over a minute later to remain within striking distance.
  • Pierce sparked MIT's game-changing run with a goal that was set up by Campagna just 43 seconds into the third quarter. Oscar Lindenthal followed with the first of his three goals during the period, Pierce added his second of the frame, Liam Gibbons buried a man-up goal, and Metalios redirected a feed from Clark Burleson.
  • Despite the deficit, Emerson continued to attack, generating three goals in the last 2:13 to make the score 14-8.
  • The Engineers had the upper hand in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Lions, 3-1. Hayden Calabretta, Daniel Jones, and Denley Kofoed each found the back of the net for the visitors.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Metalios finished with five goals and one assist while Lindenthal registered four goals.
  • Pierce posted a hat trick as Calabretta notched one goal and two assists.
  • Tim Haarmann and Alexander Shen both recorded four groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Kaden Fenno won 16 of 21 faceoff attempts and collected 10 groundballs.
  • In net, Collin Lung stopped three shots in the first half while AJ Sachwitz made four saves in the second half.
