Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Bowdoin, 17-5

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Collin Lung made a career high 21 saves as the MIT men's lacrosse team fell to No. 2 Bowdoin College, 17-5, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium. Chris Berry tallied four goals, four assists, and five groundballs for the Polar Bears.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • The Polar Bears scored the only four goals in the first quarter. Casey Ryan scored two of the four Bowdoin goals in the first before completing his hat trick with the first goal of the second to give Bowdoin a 5-0 lead.
  • MIT got on the board at 11:42 when Garrett Campagna found Hayden Calabretta for his sixth goal of the season when MIT had a man advantage.
  • A goal by Berry at 10:54 pushed the advantage back to five, 6-1, but Calabretta scored again at 8:49 when Carter Magnano took a pass at midfield on a clear and moved it ahead to the junior for a goal to make the score 6-2.
  • Bowdoin scored the final two goals of the first half to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.
  • The Polar Bears extended their advantage to 11-2 before MIT scored in the third quarter. Calabretta completed his hat trick at 6:24, finishing on an assist from Oscar Lindenthal to make the score 11-3.
  • Ryan scored his fifth goal for Bowdoin at 2:14 of the third as the visitors moved into the fourth quarter leading, 12-3.
  • The Polar Bears would go on to score five more times in the fourth quarter to close out the victory. Bobby Jones and Bryce Metalios scored for MIT in the final frame, with Jones scoring on a nice pass from Campagna at 10:01 and Metalios finishing on a feed from Dominic Zuniga in the final minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Riley Pierce led the Engineers with five groundballs, followed by three from Theo Perkins and James Lukish.
  • Ryan finished with six goals and two assists as Sam Raye-Steiner posted two goals and four assists.
  • Cam Wietfeldt won 9 of 11 faceoff attempts while Alex Choi was 6 of 8 at the faceoff "x" and collected four groundballs.
  • Alec Delgado made 13 saves in 55 minutes as Peter Flannery closed out the game in net for Bowdoin.
  • The Polar Bears had an 18-8 advantage in faceoffs that spurred an advantage in shots (60-37) and shots on goal (38-18) for the visitors.
UP NEXT: 
  • Both teams will resume conference play on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 PM. MIT will host Salve Regina University in a NEWMAC matchup while Bowdoin will travel to NESCAC foe Wesleyan University.
