Montclair State Cruises to 16-3 Win Over Baseball

MONTCLAIR, N.J.  —  Joey Severson his first career home run but the MIT baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game non-conference series to host Montclair State University, 16-3 in seven innings, on Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

THE BASICS:

  • Records: Montclair State (10-3 Overall); MIT (0-8 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dalton Chi, Maximo Del Pino and Zev Moore combined for three straight singles to start the game, loading the bases for the Engineers with no one out. With the bases loaded Joey Severson hit a grounder to third, allowing the Red Hawks to erase Chi at home while turning a double play. With two out and two on for MIT, Owen Malone doubled to right to bring home both Del Pino and Moore and give MIT the early advantage.
  • The first five Montclair State batters in the game reached base, allowing the Red Hawks to tie the game at 2-2 on back-to-back RBI singles from Billy Tigar and Chase Fischer before taking a 4-2 lead after Tigar advanced to home when Fischer stole second and Danny O'Brien singled to center to score Ficher.
  • Tigar singled to drive in two runs in the second to increase the Montclair State lead to 6-2. Montclair State also scored a run on a double play to move ahead, 7-2.
  • MIT got a run back in the top of the third when Severson hit his first career home run down the left field line to make the score 7-3.
  • The four-run deficit is as close as the Engineers would come for the remainder of the contest. The Red Hawks scored nine runs over the next four innings to take the 16-3 win.
  • Montclair State scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth on a Lukas Egenhauser two RBI single.
