Baseball Falls in Finale at Montclair State, 15-5

MONTCLAIR, N.J.  —  Montclair State University completed a three-game sweep of the MIT baseball team on Sunday, winning the final game of a three-game weekend series, 15-5 in eight innings at Yogi Berra Stadium.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Montclair State 15, MIT 5 (8 inn.)
  • Records: Montclair State (11-3 Overall); MIT (0-9 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A seven-run second inning made all the difference for Montclair State as MIT was never able to rally back past the early deficit. Billy Tigar's grand slam to right field made the score 7-0 after the Red Hawks scored a pair of runs on back-to-back bases loaded hit by pitches.
  • MIT scored in the third, fourth and fifth inning, with Maximo Del Pino driving home a run on a fielder's choice RBI in the third, James Dempsey delivering an RBI single in the fourth, while Joey Severson ripped a two-RBI double in the fifth before Owen Malone followed with an RBI single that at the time made the score 10-5.
  • Montclair State added five more runs over the game's final four innings to put the contest out of reach. Singles from Jared Levis and Tigar scored runs in the fifth, while Tigar also added a fielder's choice RBI in the seventh.
  • A Chase Fischer RBI single in the seventh and a Zach Sterns RBI single in the eighth drove in the final two Montclair State runs in the 15-5 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Malone and Dempsey each tallied a pair of hits for the Engineers, while Dalton Chi reached base on a hit and a walk.
  • Chi continues to lead MIT through nine games this year, batting .438 with 14 hits in 32 at-bats.
  • Matthew Spenner took the loss for the Engineers, giving up seven runs but only one earned in two innings. Chase Rubin pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up five runs.
  • Michael Wansaw Jr. Earned the win for Montclair State, only allowing a walk in the opening two innings.
