Men’s Lacrosse Fights Off Salve Regina for 12-9 Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A five-goal run that spanned the second and third quarters put MIT ahead for good as it fought off Salve Regina University for a 12-9 win in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Kaden Fenno recorded two goals, a 15-of-18 faceoff performance, and seven groundballs for the Engineers while Daniel Naglieri tallied three goals and two assists for the Seahawks.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 12, Salve Regina 9
  • Records: MIT (4-4 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (6-2 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Salve Regina jumped out to a 4-1 lead as the first three goals were with a man advantage. Naglieri opened the scoring two minutes into the game, quickly followed by a blast from Christopher Bethoney. Fenno won the ensuing faceoff and put MIT on the board at the 12:24 mark. The Seahawks countered with a goal from Heath Sumwalt that was set up by Bethoney 37 seconds later. A defensive battle ensued until Naglieri redirected a feed from Connor Terrien with 5:17 left. The Engineers responded with goals from Bobby Jones and Carter Magnano to close the gap to 4-3 at the end of the opening frame.
  • Garrett Campagna tied the game just seven seconds into the second stanza; however, Casey Johnson connected on a pass from Jared Zevzavadjian to give Salve Regina the slim lead with 10:43 on the clock. Campagna recorded the equalizer courtesy of an assist from Bryce Metalios over two minutes later and then Magnano put MIT ahead, 6-5, with 3:07 remaining before halftime.
  • The Engineers used a man-up goal by Zach Bleil in addition to goals from Metalios and Riley Pierce to increase their advantage to 9-5 midway through the third quarter. Chris Koltzan ended the Seahawks' scoring drought with 4:13 to go and then earned an assist on a goal by Sumwalt, helping cut the deficit in half.
  • Fenno scored 13 seconds after winning the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 10-7. An exchange of goals followed as Johnson brought Salve Regina with two (11-9) at the 7:42 mark. The score remained unchanged until Pierce found Campagna for the final goal of the game which came with 4:05 remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Campagna finished with three goals and one assist while Bleil had two goals and one assist.
  • Pierce posted one goal and two assists as Magnano contributed two goals.
  • Ashton Axe registered four groundballs and one caused turnover while Tim Haarmann generated three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Koltzan notched one goal and two assists as TJ Carlo totaled three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • In net, Collin Lung made nine saves for MIT while Griffin Caiozzo amassed 16 saves, five groundballs, and two caused turnovers for the Seahawks.
