Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off No. 18 Chicago for 10-9 Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT fought off a trio of shots during the final 22 seconds of regulation to hold on for a 10-9 victory over No. 18 University of Chicago in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Tuesday night. Pauline Vien amassed 14 saves for the Engineers while Wynne Boggan tallied three goals, five groundballs, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls for the Maroons.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 10, No. 18 UChicago 9
  • Records: MIT (4-2 Overall); No. 18 UChicago (4-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT opened the game with a player-advantage free-position goal from Annica Lam and then increased its lead courtesy of another player-advantage strike which came from Gwen Flusche at the 12:43 mark. Peyton McGuire put UChicago on the board almost two minutes later. Ashley Thomas quickly increased the Engineers' advantage to 3-1, but blasts from Boggan and McGuire evened the score with 7:45 on the clock. MIT then inched ahead on another Thomas goal.
  • The hosts controlled the action in the second quarter as they outscored the Maroons, 4-1, to take an 8-4 lead at halftime. Lam scored twice, Thomas completed the hat trick, and Eloise Shin buried a player-advantage goal that was set up by Lam with 26 seconds remaining. Avery Song accounted for the lone goal for UChicago during the period.
  • The third quarter was a defensive battle as both teams produced one goal. Boggan narrowed the gap to 8-5 just 1:14 into the frame; however, Samantha Moorhead increased MIT's cushion when she redirected a feed from Flusche with 1:55 to go.
  • The Maroons cut their deficit in half within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as Kelly Callaghan notched a solo effort and Boggan connected on a pass from Nicoletta Tsiamis. Flusche moved the score to 10-7 at the 9:01 mark, but Coco Rigoli found the back of the net in a span of 1:26.
  • Following an exchange of possessions, McGuire brought the visitors within 10-9 with 4:42 remaining. The back and forth play continued until UChicago called a timeout with 53 seconds left. Once action resumed, the Maroons produced a shot that was saved by Vien, had a shot go high, and then saw a shot hit the post with two seconds to go.
