SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – MIT outscored Springfield College, 3-1, in the fourth quarter to capture a 13-11 victory in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
Annica Lam powered the Engineers with a game-high five goals, including two during the fourth quarter.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Springfield got on the scoreboard first after 1:09 elapsed, but MIT quickly followed with goals from Nina Petulla and Alexis Reinard. The Pride knotted the game at two at the 8:44 mark; however, Ashley Thomas gave the Engineers an edge after redirecting a feed from Jillian Butler just over two minutes later. Springfield responded with a pair of free-position goals to go ahead 4-3 at the end of the quarter.
- The Engineers kicked off the second stanza with three unanswered goals as they went on to outscore the Pride, 6-2, in the frame. Lam started the run while Thomas earned assists on strikes from Laura Day and Eloise Shin. Following a Springfield goal, Petulla completed the hat trick with back-to-back goals and then Lam found the back of the net at the 5:20 mark. Less than two minutes later, the Pride trimmed its deficit to 9-6.
- Reinard set up Lam for a player-advantage goal 1:30 into the third quarter. However, Springfield rattled off four unanswered goals, including two with a player advantage, to tie the game at 10 heading into the fourth quarter.
- Lam ended MIT's scoring drought after 2:48 expired while Reinard connected on a pass from Thomas at the 9:58 mark. The Pride narrowed the gap to 12-11 with 7:29 remaining, but a solo effort from Lam three minutes later helped create some breathing room. Down the stretch, Pauline Vien came up with a save while Petulla forced a turnover with just over a minute to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thomas totaled one goal and four assists as Reinard posted two goals and one assist.
- Gwen Flusche and Samantha Moorhead both registered three draw controls while Flusche added two groundballs.
- Vien ended the day with 14 saves, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
