Big First Quarter Propels Women’s Lacrosse to 20-4 Victory Over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – A 7-1 scoring advantage in the first quarter powered the MIT women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 victory over Salve Regina University in a NEWMAC game on Wednesday night. Nina Petulla tallied four goals, helping her become the 29th player in program history to surpass 100 career points.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 20, Salve Regina 3
  • Records: MIT (6-2 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (4-4 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a span of 24 seconds, MIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Gwen Flusche opened the scoring at 13:48, Ashley Thomas found the back of the net 15 seconds later and then she set up Laura Day for a goal with 13:21 on the clock. Alexis Reinard increased the Engineers' lead on a feed from Thomas at the 11:43 mark, but Salve Regina got on the scoreboard midway through the quarter. MIT countered with another Thomas goal, a free-position goal from Flusche, and a player-advantage goal by Lam to end the quarter with a 7-1 advantage.
  • The Engineers continued to control the action in the second stanza as they generated six unanswered goals. Lam and Jillian Butler provided the first two goals while Petulla and Thomas followed with back-to-back goals.
  • The Seahawks ended their scoring drought 19 seconds into the third quarter, making the score 13-2. MIT replied with goals from Eloise Shin, Flusche, and Petulla to extend their lead.
  • Day gave the Engineers a 17-2 advantage courtesy of a free-position goal early in the fourth quarter. Salve Regina found the back of the net at the 9:32 mark, but Flusche connected on a pass from Butler two minutes later. MIT followed with a goal from Shin that was set up by Cecilia McCarthy and then another blast from Petulla. The Seahawks buried a free-position goal with 1:04 left to cap the scoring.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Thomas generated four goals, four assists, and a caused turnover while Flusche compiled four goals, one assist, five draw controls, and three groundballs.
  • Lam ended the night with two goals, one assist, and three groundballs as Day registered two goals, one assist, and seven draw controls.
  • Butler chipped in one goal, one assist, three draw controls, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
  • Samantha Moorhead led the way with three caused turnovers, followed by two from Sophia Loiselle.
  • Pauline Vien made two saves in the first half as Ashton Flather closed out the game in net for the visitors.
