Baseball Powers Past Emerson in NEWMAC Opener, 17-2

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.  —  John Dwyer hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Jack Finnegan hit a fifth inning grand slam to help power the MIT baseball team to a 17-2 victory in seven innings over Emerson College in the NEWMAC opener for both teams on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 17, Emerson 2 (7 inn.)
  • Records: MIT (4-9 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC); Emerson (2-12 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a 1-2-3 top of the first from MIT starter Chase Rubin, the Engineers took control of the contest in the first innings, scoring six runs on three hits and an error while chasing Emerson start Tyler Metclaf from the game before he could record an out. MIT scored on a wild pitch, a walk, a sacrifice fly and an error in the opening inning before Maximo Del Pino delivered a two RBI double down the left field line that made the score 6-0.
  • MIT scored on a fielder choice RBI from James Dempsey in the second before tacking on five more runs in the third inning to surge ahead 12-1.
  • The big blast in the third inning came off the bat of Dwyer, as he took a 1-1 pitch deep to right center to make the score 12-1 with his first home run of the season.
  • With a comfortable lead, Rubin concluded his day by striking out the side in the top of the fourth, finishing his 4.0 innings with eight strikeouts while giving up just three hits and one run.
  • Emerson pulled a run back in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a Braeden O'Connell two-out RBI double, but the Engineers responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away.
  • A bases loaded walk to Dalton Chi brought home the first run of the fifth but it was Finnegan that put the exclamation point on the day with a grand slam to left center that made the score 17-2.
  • Jonathan Freedman pitched the second of his two innings of relief in the sixth before Owen Malone moved from third base to the mound to close out the game for MIT, striking out a pair of batters with a scoreless seventh inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Finnegan's first home run of the season and just the second of his career.

  • Metcalf surrendered three walks in the opening innings, as the Lions pitching staff struggled throughout the day, surrendering 11 walks to the MIT lineup.
