No. 8 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 31 Caltech, 7-0

PASADENA, Calif. – The No. 8 MIT women's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches following a 7-0 victory at No. 31 Caltech on Tuesday.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 8 MIT 7, No. 31 Caltech 0
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (7-1 Overall); No. 31 Caltech (4-4 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES:
  • In the top spot, Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados defeated Carissa Gerung and Naya Kessman, 6-0.
  • Katie Driscoll and Anastasia Samets jumped out to a 5-0 lead before going on to post a 6-2 win over Hannah Ramsperger and Polaris Hayes in the No. 3 position and securing the doubles point.
  • In a tightly played match, Carley Chen and Chloe Zeng won the last two games to defeat Aoi Kunimoto and Anna Szczuka, 6-4, in the No. 3 slot.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SINGLES:
  • Driscoll kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ramsperger in the No. 3 position.
  • At No. 5 singles, Sophia Yang built 4-1 lead, but Kunimoto closed the gap to 4-3. Yang responded by winning next two games to take the first set. In the second set, back-to-back victories gave Yang a 5-2 advantage before going on to record another 6-3 win.
  • In the first set at No. 6 singles, Rayna Li won the first four games against Kessman en route to 6-1 victory. The second set was a back-and-forth battle that saw Li take a 5-4 edge, however, Kessman rattled off three straight wins to force a third frame. Li bounced back by topping Kessman, 6-2, to clinch the match for MIT.
  • Tied at 2-2 in the first set at the No. 1 spot, Saina Deshpande won next three games, but Gerung countered by trimming the deficit to 5-4. Deshpande thwarted the comeback attempt by claiming the final game of the set. In the second set, Deshpande won the first three games, however, Gerung rallied to take a 4-3 lead. Deshpande produced back-to-back victories to go in front, 5-4. Gerung tied the set, but Deshpande went on to record a 7-5 win.
  • In the No. 4 spot, Chen defeated Hayes, 6-1, in the opening set. In a tightly played second set, Chen came back to tie the frame at 5-5 and 6-6 before going on to win the tiebreaker, 7-3.
  • In the No. 2 position, Zeng established 4-1 advantage before going on to post 6-3 victory over Szczuka in the opening set. In the second set, Zeng gradually built a 4-2 lead; however, Szczuka won four straight games to send the match to a third set. Zeng responded by recording a 6-1 victory to wrap up the match.
